Smart Travel with Family

Are you planning to take your family on a trip? Planning an itinerary with some flexibility is a smart move but that is not the only planning that is necessary. Though many people just book flights and hotels and wing it from there, it is best to take as much as possible into consideration.

Anything can happen when you and your family travel to a distant place. Injuries and illnesses can happen anywhere so it is best to plan for the worst and expect the best. Purchasing travel insurance that covers all of you for any injury or illness that could happen is wise. In selecting insurance, check to be sure it will cover you everywhere you plan to go. Some insurance may be accepted in one location and not in another. Insurance is one of those things that are better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Along with getting insurance, you should look into how you will get around once you arrive at your destination. If you are flying, most airports offer shuttle service to and from your hotel but after that, you are on your own. Do some research into transportation options at your destination. Most places offer car rentals and taxis. Cities usually have a bus system as well. Buses are usually the most economical but unless the sights and events you plan to visit are close to bus stops, there may be times when taking a taxi is the best option even though it may cost more.

If you want to be able to go beyond where buses and taxis can take you, renting a car at least part of the time is a good option. Renting a car is more expensive than using the bus but, depending on where you travel, it may be less than using taxis to go everywhere. With a rental car, it is easier to go where and when you want. Getting lost in unfamiliar places is less of a problem since many rental cars are now equipped with GPS.

Of course, planning which events to attend, sights to see and activities to participate in is important. Here is where flexibility is needed. It helps to know where the places you want to go are so you can better plan visiting them in a way that doesn’t feel rushed. Also, don’t try to cram everything in if you have a long list of places you want to go. Make a list of the most important ones and a list of places you would like to see but are not as important. Your lists may change once you get to your hotel and start touring. You may even add things you hadn’t thought of before.

Smart planning is to plan enough that your bases are covered but don’t over plan. Build in some flexibility and don’t forget some down time so your trip is not frenzied.
